Homework-

due Wednesdays

Homework will be assigned on a weekly basis to reinforce the skills we are working on in class.  Homework packets will be sent home on Thursday and are due the following Wednesday.

Although it may be tempting, please don't have your child do the whole packet in one day. We assign purposeful homework to help reinforce the skills we are working on in class, allow your child to share with you what they're learning at school, and establish a solid foundation of study skills for later years. As you know, a positive attitude about school starts at home. Having parents show enthusiasm towards reading, writing, and math help build habits that encourage lifelong learning.

Homework Tips

1. Chose a time of day for homework and try to keep the routine. We know many parents work, but you should only be spending 15 minutes on homework a day.  (This does not include nightly reading.)  Set a kitchen timer.  When the timer goes off, ask your child if he/she wants to complete the page you're working on or if he/she wants to stop and finish it tomorrow.  Always give your child the option and honor their choice.  If you have extra time within that 15 minute window, use that time to practice reading/writing sight words or read with your child.

2. Please sit with your child during "homework time" and help him/her complete assignments when needed. Please do not give him/her the answers or do writing/drawing for your child.

3. Keep it positive. If your child is struggling with the homework, work with them in an encouraging manner, and please communicate this with the teachers so we can help your family figure out how to make it a more positive experience for your child.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please contact us.

Reading for 15 minutes each day is always a part of the homework, the most important part.

  1. Children who are read to at least three times a week by a family member are almost twice as likely to score in the top 25% in reading compared to children who are read to less than 3 times a week. Denton, Kristen and Gerry West, Children’s Reading and Mathematics Achievement in Kindergarten and First Grade (PDF file), U.S. Department of Education, NCES, Washington, DC, 2002.

**It is your child's responsibility to do the homework and return it to the basket on top of the cubbies on Wednesdays.
